A Bouquet of Quilts: Garden Inspired Projects For The
Home are a series of Japanese designs from Nihon Vogue's "Quilt Japan" magazine.
There are nine projects: including floral and garden inspired quilts, a pillow,
a sewing notions kit and more. The projects are suitable for all levels of quiltmaking,
and cover such techniques as traditional piecing, applique, trapunto, and paper piecing.
Because the original designs were in metric sizing they
have been changed to US measurements, but both are included in the book.
Dutch Treat Tulips has a great folk art look. It is best
made by someone with some quiltmaking experience, as it has some small curved piecing
and a set-in seam, but is so pretty; it makes you want to make a project using these
blocks. They would be a great way to practice your hand piecing skills.
The quilts and projects in this book show that even though
these designs have traditional quilting origins, they are a different interpretation
of what is traditional. I am always awed by the incredible work that goes into a
Japanese quilt: making designs on a smaller scale (the log cabin block is 2 ½",
but the book does offer a 4" variation), a surprise twist on a flower design, an
intricate border done on point, or maybe even a simplification of a design (Buds
In A Basket) and always a little extra something (the sewing kit). Their quilts
"surprise and delight us." Even though these quilts were made by Japanese Quiltmakers,
we understand because quilting is a universal language.
These designs make me want to go start one right away...
so, bye, I've gone to my studio to quilt!
