Marcus Brothers Challenges Quilters to Meet Aunt Grace’s “Friends Around the World”
On the success of its 2003 Aunt Grace Quilt Challenge, Marcus Brothers is pleased to announce the launch of its second Challenge, featuring “AUNT GRACE: Friends Around the World”, the newest 1930’s vintage line by noted designer and historian, Judie Rothermel. Scheduled to run from November 2004 through October 2005, the Challenge invites quilters to make the most creative use of this unique travel-themed collection. Quilters must incorporate at least 24 of the 36 fabrics into their designs.
Like all Aunt Grace Collections, “Aunt Grace: Friends Around the World” features the popular 1930’s conversational prints that Judie has become known for, with an emphasis on dolls depicting various countries and cities worldwide. Quilters may also incorporate previously released Aunt Grace Designs, as well as Aunt Grace Solids by Marcus Brothers to complete their entries.
Quilters are invited to submit completely original designs, as well as those based on classic quilt blocks, with completed entries measuring from 35” square to 45” x 54”. New submission categories include: Best Machine Quilted, Best Hand Quilted, Best Pieced Design, and Best Appliquéd Design. In addition, Best of Show and Judge’s Choice prizes will be awarded. All entries will be judged by a panel moderated by Judie Rothermel.
While quilters will compete for a top-of-the-line Husqvarna Viking sewing machine and prizes, special gifts from OmniGrid and cash prizes, Judie is confident that the creative aspects and the chance for recognition from fellow quilters are the contest’s true draws for most quilters. “We were excited by the overwhelming response to the first challenge - the variety, creativity and craftsmanship of the 2003 entries - and are eager to see the wonderful new designs based on my ‘Friends Around the World’ theme!”
The fabric collection, along with complete contest details, entry forms and official rules, is now available in quilt shops worldwide. Quilters can also locate information at www.MarcusBrothers.com, or send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Marcus Brothers, Aunt Grace Challenge II, 980 Avenue of the Americas, NY, NY 10018. Entries must be shipped to arrive only between September 1 and September 15, 2004. Winning entries will be displayed at Fall 2005 Quilt Market in Houston; following the judging, all entries will also be featured online.
For the past 15 years, Judie Rothermel has shared her knowledge and passion for antique textiles with quilters worldwide though her collaboration with Marcus Brothers. She owns and operates Schoolhouse Quilts along with her husband Bob, and has authored various books on quilt design and history.
