40" x 52"

Pele Sleeps consists of two quilts, the island and the ocean.  A pattern is forthcoming.  The island is a twist on the usual "snowflake" method for Hawaiian quilts. Pele, goddess of the volcanoes, is asleep as the mountain, with her flowing hair as the lava flows (reds) and valleys (green).  This motif is repeated four times, not symmetrically but facing to the right each time.  The island is "bound" with a raw edge of sand.  The island is attached to the ocean quilt, which features raw-edged strips of batiks appliqued and quilted to the background in one step to form the undulating waves.  This quilt is made entirely of fabrics from Bali Fabrics, Inc., and features reverse and regular machine applique, quilting, a little bit of fabric paint (to accentuate Pele's face), beading and intense machine quilting.
