Description:
This block utilizes half square triangles and pinwheels with the rows of the block going diagonally. Somewhat more involved in the assembly, this is a block with a lot of interest and movement. Try varying the areas of lights, darks and mediums to get a totally different look.

Fabric Reqs For Block: (Example fabrics in parentheses)
  • 5" x 37" Light (Yellow)
  • 5 1/2 " x 13" Dark (Navy)
  • 5 1/2" x 10" 1st Medium (Yellow/Orange)
  • 5" x 9" 2nd Medium(Blue)
Cutting Instructions
Piece Shape # Fabric Instructions  
A  12  Light Cut six 3 7/8" x 3 7/8" squares. Cut in half diagonally once.
B  6 Dark Cut three 3 7/8" x 3 7/8" squares. Cut in half diagonally once.
C  2 1st Medium Cut one 3 7/8" x 3 7/8" square. Cut in half diagonally once.
D  8 2nd Medium Cut two 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" squares. Cut in half diagonally twice.
E  8 Light Cut two 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" squares. Cut in half diagonally twice.
F  1 1st Medium Cut one 4 " x 4 " square.

Assembly (1/4" seam allowance throughout):
Instruction Diagram
Step 1: Sew all dark triangle B's to a Light triangle A. Press seams open or toward the dark (A/B unit)
Step 2: Sew all 2nd Medium triangles D to Light triangles E. Press open or toward the medium. (D/E unit)
Step 3: Sew four D/E units together to make a pinwheel. Press seams open or toward the medium. Repeat.
Step 4: Sew 2 A/B units together, add a Light triangle A to one end of the A/B units Refer to diagram for placement. Repeat. (Sections 1)
Step 5: Sew one 1st Medium triangle to one dark side of an A/B unit. Sew a Light triangle to the other dark side of this unit. Repeat. Refer to diagram for placement (Sections 2)
Step 6: Sew Section 1 to Section 2. Repeat. Refer to diagram for placement* These are the Outer Rows.
Step 7: Sewing Center Row: Triangle A, Pinwheel unit, Square F, Pinwheel unit, triangle A. press seams open or to one side.
Step 8: Sew an Outer Row to either side of Center Row. Press seams.
