Description:
This block takes on a 3-d look as it is put together. Just in time for Valentines Day. You can alternate the location of the darks and lights to get different 3-d effects.

Finished Size: 12"

Fabric Reqs For Block: (Example fabrics in parentheses)
  • 4" x 24" rectangle Light (tan)
  • 4 " x 20" rectangle 1st Medium (red)
  • 4 " x 20 " rectangle 2nd Medium (green)
  • 4 " x 20" rectangle dark (black)
Cutting Instructions
Piece Shape # Fabric Instructions  
A  8  Light Cut four 3 7/8" x 3 7/8" squares. Cut each square in half diagonally.
B  2 Light Cut two 3 " squares
C  7 1st Medium Cut four 3 7/8" x 3 7/8" squares. Cut each square in half diagonally.
D  1 1st Medium Cut one 4 " x 4 " square. Cut in half diagonally in both directions (you will have leftovers).
E  7 2nd Medium Cut four 3 7/8" x 3 7/8" squares. Cut each square in half diagonally.
F  1 2nd Medium Cut one 4 " x 4 " square. Cut in half diagonally in both directions (you will have leftovers)
G  2 Dark Cut one 4 " x 4 " square. Cut in half diagonally in both directions (you will have leftovers).
H  7 Dark Cut four 3 7/8" x 3 7/8" squares. Cut each square in half diagonally.

Assembly (1/4" seam allowance throughout) Press to the dark side unless noted otherwise:
Instruction Diagram
Step 1: Sew Light triangle "A" to 1st Medium triangle "C" to form a square. You need four A-C units
Step 2: Sew Light triangle "A" to 2nd Medium triangle "E" to form a square. You need four A-C units.
Step 3: Sew Med-1 triangle "C" to Dark triangle "H" to form a square. You need two C-H units.
Step 4: Sew 2nd Medium triangle "E" to Dark triangle "H" to form a square. You need two E-H units.
Step 5: Sew 1st Medium triangle D to Dark triangle G along the short side to form the D-G unit a triangle (see diagram).
Step 6: Sew 2nd Medium triangle F to Dark triangle G along the short side to form the F-G unit a triangle (see diagram).
Step 7: Sew unit D-G to triangle E along the diagonal side (E-D-G).
Step 8: Sew unit F-G to triangle C along the diagonal side (C-F-G).
Step 9: Sew unit A-C to unit E-A w/C matching up to E(repeat). Complete the top row by sewing the A-C-E-A sections together.
Step 10: Sew unit E-D-G to unit H-E matching the G to the H , Sew unit C-F-G to unit C-H matching the H to the G. Complete the 2nd row by joining the two sections, matching the E to the C (see diagram).
Step 11: Sew unit A-E to unit E-H matching the E triangles , Sew unit H-C to unit C-A matching the C triangles. Complete the 3rd row by joining the two sections, matching the H triangles (see diagram).
Step 12: Sew Light B square to A-E unit, matching the light sides. Sew light B Square to C-A unit, matching the light sides. Compete the last row by joining the two sections matching the 2nd Medium "E" triangle to the 1st Medium "C" triangle.
Step 13: Sew rows together to complete the block.
