Review: By Dori Hawks

With your first look at “A Southern Album”, you quickly see that this is no ordinary quilt book. From its’ hand painted original art work throughout by Diane, including the wooden painted okra bookmark attached to twine, to the remembrances and quotations, little “extra” projects and recipes, this book has a lot more to offer than the normal quilt book.

There is a little history with drawings of each traditional block that are embellished with a little appliqué and “Southern meaning to tell the story of the Southern lifestyle……an album reflecting that remarkable place we call the South.”

Kristin & Diane encourage you to add your thoughts and ideas as you work and make the designs, so that this book becomes your Southern Album, a treasure to be sure. Throughout the book are unique areas with hand drawn borders to add your thoughts and stories as you make your quilt.

This book is a delight, and is joyful to read. It is worth purchasing just for the stories and remembrances, but who wouldn’t want to make this wonderful quilt. A Southern Album is a must for your personal or guild library. Because this is self-published, it may not be available in your local quilt shop, so I have included information about the two locations of People, Places & Quilts.

There are over 30 block designs, and many quilt variations. I bet you can’t make just one! They are addicting, accurate and easy. Ready, set, go – how many blocks will you make? I am ready to close myself in my studio and have an Anita Solomon “Make It Simpler” paper piecing marathon. Definitely add this to your personal or guild library. Look for this book at your favorite quilt shop!
