Haleakala Sunrise is an original design by Sarah Smith (pattern available directly from Sarah at paulsarah@rockisland.com or through www.quilterswarehouse.com under "Sarah by the Sea" at www.quilterswarehouse.com/acatalog/Warehouse_Catalog__Sarah_By_The_Sea_383.html).

Inspired by lava flows and her husband's service as a volunteer firefighter, Sarah wanted to create a quilt with flames. Hawaiian-style quilts provided the perfect style. Using her own hand-dyed fabrics, Sarah created this machine-appliqued single layer version using variegated thread for the pattern cover; there is also an interlaced two-layer red/green version which Sarah did entirely by hand.
