Description:
One of the first blocks a beginner makes, but because of it's endless possibilities, makes it a fun block to experiment with.

Fabric Reqs For Block: (Example fabrics in parentheses)
  • 8" x 19" Light (Beige)
  • 4" x 4" Medium (Red Plaid)
  • 5" x 5" Dark (Navy)
  • 6" x 10" Medium/Dark (Red)
Cutting Instructions
Piece Shape # Fabric Instructions  
A  4  Light Cut four 3 ½" x 3 ½" squares .
B  1 Medium Cut one 3 ½" x 3 ½" square.
C  4 Light Cut one 4 ¼" x 4 ¼" square. Cut in half diagonally twice.
D  4 Dark Cut one 4 ¼" x 4 ¼" square. Cut in half diagonally twice.
E  8 Medium/Dark Cut two 4 ¼" x 4 ¼" squares. Cut in half diagonally twice.

Assembly (1/4" seam allowance throughout):
Instruction Diagram
Step 1: Sew four medium/dark E triangles to four light A triangles along one short side. Press seams open or toward medium/dark. (Section 1)
Step 2: Sew four medium/dark E triangles to four dark D triangles along one short side. Press seam allowance open or toward the dark. (Section 2)
Step 3: Sew each section 1 to a section 2 to make a square. Press seams open or toward one side.
Step 4: Row 1 and 3 sewing order: A, Step 3 square, A. Press seams open or toward A.
Step 5: Row 2 sewing order: Step 3 square, B, Step 3 square. Press seams open or toward B
Step 6: Sew Rows 1, 2, 3.
